Heavy versus extreme rainfall events in southeast Australia

چکیده
Focussing on the major cities of Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne in southeast Australia, this study seeks to determine environmental factors that distinguish between heavy rainfall events (HREs) extreme (EREs). Using daily rain gauge observations, HREs EREs are defined for each domain based, respectively, 95th 99th percentiles wet-day period 1979–2018. K-means clustering is applied mean sea-level pressure, data from ERA5 obtain a set representative large-scale circulation patterns associated with these events. Composite synoptic maps, vertical profiles, series column-integrated diagnostics then examined cluster used compare characteristics EREs. For all three cities, an upper-level trough west, ascent, positive column water vapour (CWV) anomalies, strong moisture transport over analysis domain. Brisbane clusters characterised by coastal trough/low moist onshore flow Tasman Coral Seas. Melbourne, more distinct, front, cut-off low, inland trough. Compared HREs, show amplified trough, stronger motion larger CWV anomalies In also feature deeper flow, promoting enhanced transport. A diagnostic termed upward transport, which combines key ingredients high shown discriminate well domains. contrast, surface temperature, frequently linked extremes via Clausius–Clapeyron scaling, shows significant overlap different event categories, particularly Sydney.

3. Frequency Distributions of Heavy Rainfall Events
The data used in developing the frequency relations consisted of both daily and hourly precipitation records from Illinois and from nearby stations in surrounding states. The daily data, mostly from nonrecording raingages, spanned the 83-year period from 1901 through 1983. They included data from the 61 precipitation-reporting stations discussed previously (figure 71, whose records had been car...

متن کاملAnalysis of extreme daily rainfall in southeast Asia with a gridded daily rainfall data set
The objective of this study is to estimate the daily extreme precipitation distribution in an Asian monsoon region considering orographic precipitation in mountainous areas. For this purpose, the APHRODITE data set and precipitation observations from 150 raingauges throughout Thailand were used as the main input. First, a bias-correction for underestimated precipitation in the APHRODITE data se...
متن کاملBayesian Changepoint Analysis for Extreme Events (Typhoons, Heavy Rainfall, and Heat Waves): An RJMCMC Approach
A hierarchical Bayesian framework is developed to identify multiple abrupt regime shifts in an extreme event series. Specifically, extreme events are modeled as a Poisson process with a gamma-distributed rate. Multiple candidate hypotheses are considered, under each of which there presumably exist a certain number of abrupt shifts of the rate. A Bayesian network involving three layers—data, par...
متن کاملInvestigation of the atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with extreme rainfall events over the Coastal West Africa
This study investigates the atmospheric circulation associated with extreme rainfall events over the coastal West Africa. The rainfall data of this study were obtained from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), spanning from 1981 to 2010. The atmospheric datasets were also obtained from the ERA-Interim reanalysis. The study employed the Z-Index to categorize dry and wet years into...
